Quick shout out to Jimmy Johns – as part of their customer appreciation work, they just dropped off a dozen or so sandwiches to our office and office building! Wow, we must order them quite often…thanks Jimmy Johns!
The biggest story in industry news clearly is the NBA playoffs…or Google Wallet, whatever is more important to you this Friday afternoon. So what is Google Wallet? Fast Company provides a good look at just what Google Wallet is:
Google’s just revealed its digital Wallet solution, based on near field wireless tech in its Android-powered smartphones. It’s not just about reinventing the good ol’ plastic magnetic strip credit card, it’s actually about changing nearly everything about shopping–“tomorrow’s next best shopping experience.” It’s a partnership with Mastercard’s PayPass system, with Sprint and Citibank along for the ride, and it should be a workable solution all around the world for users, wherever PayPass is accepted.
Over 70% of people use their credit cards online for shopping, said Google’s VP of Commerce Stephanie Tilenius, a situation radically different from just a few years ago, but e-commerce is still just 8% of overall retail even while it’s due to surpass a trillion dollars in 2013. Real store shopping rules the roost, then, but actual shopping is just not a “magical experience” and needs rebooting.
Google Wallet is definitely something to be keeping an eye on in the field of mobile payment transactions. Here’s Ars Technica’s take on Google Wallet as well.
Fast Company also takes a look at one of the results of everyone switching from paper to paperless transactions: your inbox gets quickly cluttered with e-receipts. Project Slice is launching a new application to help you manage all those e-receipts you have been and will be collecting.
Mobile Crunch has an article about how many are choosing their cell phones over sleep nowadays. Definitely an unhealthy trend, despite the apparent increase in productivity. Personally, I use my cell phone as one of my alarm clocks, and tend to watch some Netflix or G4 before going to bed, so while I recognize the importance of the idea of leaving your cell phone in a different room than the one you sleep in, life tends to get in the way.
Oh, and here’s the recipe for today’s lunch: Zucchini and Almond Pasta Salad.
