One of the companies Evolve Systems follows on Twitter is Constant Contact, the email and event marketing company. They shared a link this morning on Twitter from Smart Blogs – Why Are Entrepreneurs So Worried About Social Media?
Entrepreneurs dread social media. That’s the takeaway from a recent poll of 258 SmartBrief on Entrepreneurs readers, which found that entrepreneurs would choose to outsource social media before any other single business function. Check out the results:
If you had an unlimited budget, which function of your business would you most like to outsource?
Social media — 28.57%
Other — 25.11%
Public relations — 19.91%
Sales — 16.45%
Customer service — 9.96%
When did social media become such a chore — and why?
One of the growing parts of Evolve Systems is our focus on helping businesses understand and utilize social media. We understand that social media can be daunting for businesses, especially those that are too young or too small to devote much time or resources to it. That’s why our Website Maintenance Plan focuses a generous portion of its time on setting companies up on social media platforms and equipping them to manage their social media profiles long term.
Yet while Evolve Systems is available to help businesses start successful social media campaigns and profiles, the underlining goal is for Evolve Systems to eventually back off and let those businesses manage their own social media channels. We are here to equip and train. Social media is best managed internally by companies, by employees who are empowered by their employers to speak for the company and engage the Internet in social conversation. Outside companies like Evolve Systems can help get you started by finding you followers, pushing content and news items out to subscribers, and making your interests public on the Internet, but that unique voice that is your company will be lacking until you have taken over completely.
To use an analogy, there is a world of difference between following Apple on Twitter and following Steve Jobs personally; it’s the difference between PR and the Vice President of Such and Such Relations, and in social media, no one wants to listen to the PR department.
