While 2016 was an exciting and surprising year as far as Digital Marketing Trends go, 2017 is expected to be even better! It’s important to have all of these trends on your radar if you want to stay competitive in the industry!
Live streaming has given users the ability to virtually experience things they never could before. This sense of living vicariously through someone else’s lens has users hooked. People enjoy in-the-moment style content and because of this, live streaming will take off in 2017. Social networks like Facebook and Twitter integrated streaming capabilities in their apps this year. And third-party apps like Periscope are gaining popularity, particularly among the event planning community. As we head into 2017, it will be interesting to see which live streaming platforms thrive. Meerkat learned the hard way this year that they couldn’t compete against Twitter-owned-Periscope. We’ll likely see new players enter the live-streaming ring as the year progresses while developers try to perfect the medium. I’m predicting it will be difficult to edge out Facebook Live, Periscope and Twitter’s own built-in streaming functionality.
This summer, we saw the popularity of Augmented Reality come to life through Pokémon Go. While the popularity of Pokémon Go was fleeting, it left two impressions on the online marketing word. First, people are ready for Augmented Reality and want more of it. The second takeaway is that Augmented Reality is very profitable when done correctly. If you need proof of AR’s profitability, Pokémon Go was bringing in $10 million a day during its peak. Based on this, we think we’ll be seeing a lot more of AR as we head into 2017.
Immersive Visual Content
While AR is one form of creating an immersive experience for users, there are other ways that work too! Depending on your business model, hosting webinars or online workshops is one way to get users to interact, rather than just observe.
Native advertising has been around for years, but it’s still worth talking about because it’s about to get even more popular in 2017. It’s a way for brands to advertise in a natural-looking way. It’s sneaky and effective, and that’s why brands prefer it to conventional advertising methods. Expect new and improved forms of native advertising to start appearing in your online feeds in the new year.
Unforeseen Digital Marketing Trends
As the year comes to a close, we hope you keep these digital marketing trends for the new year in the back of your mind to keep up with your competition. While there will almost definitely be new trends that come up throughout the year that few predicted, we feel that these four tips are a good place to start when preparing and planning for 2017!
