Last night the movie The Social Network took home multiple Golden Globes. The Social Network, for the few who haven’t seen it, is a fictionalized account of the true story of the creation of Facebook, now the most popular website on the entire Internet. What started as a social network for college students was eventually opened up to other academic students, and then eventually to everyone.
For many now, the question is – “If Facebook is the most popular website on the Internet, why am I or my business not better represented on Facebook? How can I get visitors on Facebook to come to my website?” A Facebook account is free to set up and just costs time to manage, but Facebook does offer options for advertising, which have been proven to get conversions and site visits; those advertising options are not free, however.
The best course of action for a business is to set up a Facebook account under a single user’s name, and from that account set up a Facebook business page. But that’s just the initial step. Now you must promote your Facebook page while still promoting your regular website. There is no reason to not include the same information on both sites; all your contact info, special offers, news, articles, blogs, everything, can be duplicated on Facebook and other social media platforms. Remember – if the goal is to drive sales, then it doesn’t matter if the customer is coming from your Facebook page or your personal website. You can control the experience on either site.
Update your Facebook on either a daily or every few days basis. People are looking for new content, for communication, for engagement. New content is not, however, just copy and pasting some Word document you have lying around that is a couple thousand words long. Nor is engagement simply spitting your message out there and not customizing it for specific audiences or making it sound like it came from an actual human instead of a PR machine. Facebook, to a large extent, is about friends, and unless you are one of those types of people, you don’t talk about your business and products every time you meet your friends face to face; that’s disingenuous, and people won’t trust you or like you much.
Facebook is the most popular website on the Internet. But, it has its own set of rules and standards that everyone must play and abide by. If the thought of being forced into a particular mindset is too difficult, then you may not want to consider being on Facebook. But you will be missing out on the greatest source of traffic on the Internet.
