Using social media to promote your brand and your great marketing content online has never been more important. Differentiating between all the different social media platforms and which button to use for what purpose can be confusing and ever-changing. New platforms are ever emerging.
Here’s a little primer on share and follow “basics” and how to implement buttons for the most popular platforms, Facebook and Twitter, on your site. Each of the different platforms has its own nuances. The first thing that is important to understand is the difference between social follow and social share buttons.
The function of these buttons is to promote your business’ presence and increase visibility on the social media sites. The goal is to generate fans or followers of your business. These are most commonly seen on the homepage of a website but can be placed in other locations too. It’s a good idea to call social follow buttons out by stating “Follow us on Twitter” or “Like us on Facebook” to get the action that you want when your visitor clicks the button.
These buttons/links serve to allow your visitors and readers to easily share content from your site to their social network and connections. The goal is to extend your reach to people who might not have otherwise known about you, or generate visits back to your website. It’s a good idea to add these to any piece of content that you create, such as webpages, blog articles or email marketing pieces.
Search engines factor in your social media presence when determining search engine placement for your content. The more social signals in the form of links, shares and follows, the better the placement. Adding follow and share buttons allows you to maintain ongoing contact with your visitors and encourage them to share content that they find informational or entertaining with their network of contacts.
Every business wants to expand its reach to a larger audience. These are just a few of the ways to increase your brand exposure.
