Social media in the restaurant industry is extremely important if you want to stand out among your competitors. Adding a “fun-factor” to your social media presence will increase customer engagement and get people through your doors. If done it is correct. We’ll give tips on how to properly take risks on social media, without having your efforts come back to bite you.
Have Fun, But Not Too Much Fun: Properly Managing Social Media in the Restaurant Industry
Your social media posts should have a solid sense of voice. And hopefully, this voice is a funny one. Expressing your brand’s sense of humor will encourage users to engage with you. But there are three rules you should keep in mind when trying to be funny on social media:
- Have fun, but make sure it stays light-hearted. Never make offensive jokes or take things too far. You are representing an entire brand.
- Many people today turn use social media to express their grievances – especially with restaurants where there are frequent mishaps. If a user is making inappropriate comments on one of your restaurant’s posts, remember to maintain control of the situation. Respond politely, and if necessary use your power as an account administrator to delete nasty comments and report users. But use this control wisely.
- Finally, provide information. Make sure your followers are getting something out of following YOU. For example, I follow Chipotle on Twitter and today I learned that guac is free on veggie meals. Even though it’s simple, I still learned something new as a consumer. And now I’ve shared this good news with all of you! Things are always changing in restaurants, so there should be plenty of information to share with your followers.
Make Sure There’s Visual Appeal
Articles on the web that contain pictures have a 94% higher readership than those with plain text. Humans are visual creatures, and when it comes to social media users need pictures to grab their attention. Not to harp on Chipotle’s Twitter account, but they even using interactive games where followers can score coupons and free food. I reference their social media presence a lot because it is a great example of a restaurant that is doing it right. Take a look at their account and you will see they are extremely engaged with their customer base. If you need more inspiration, check out the top 25 performing restaurants on social media. While they are all big names, their tactics are applicable to any restaurant.
Know Your Audience
Know your audience, and know where to find them. Based on the demographic of your customer base, you should be able to determine which social media platforms they’re on. Not everyone is using Instagram (yet) and the same goes for Snapchat. But maybe you are targeting a younger audience and these platforms are suitable. If you put research into who your audience is and where to properly engage with them, your restaurant will benefit from this.
